WHO AM I?

Hello!
I am Callum Ewing, a freelance journalist and a recent first class honours graduate in broadcast journalism from the University of Salford
Here is a brief bit about me.
I left secondary school in the summer of 2019, and despite some pressure to go straight to university, I decided to have a gap year as, quite frankly, I did not know what I wanted to do.
At this point, I had done a few things media-related, such as work experience at some production companies, and I had been volunteering at my local community radio station.
What really made me want to become a broadcast journalist was when I undertook a two-week placement at BBC South East after sending in an application and then being chosen after a panel interview where I had to pitch a story.
During this two-week placement, I attended football press conferences, political roundtable debates, helped create packages, and helped with the cameras in the studio.
Ever since that placement, I have wanted to become a broadcast journalist, as I loved the buzz of the newsroom, telling stories, and being creative.
I began my broadcast journalism degree in 2021, and I have more or less loved every bit of it. I now feel I am a multi-skilled journalist who can now produce stories for both radio, TV, and online.
I have studied a varied number of modules, including sports journalism, podcasting, lifestyle journalism, and political journalism. For my final major project I made a 10 minute radio documentary about benign brain tumours which has been used by the Brain Tumour Charity to help spread awareness.
I was also part of the university student radio Shock since September 2021, where I presented on shows such as the sports show, and I also wrote and read the news bulletins. I created and presented an award-winning entertainment show called And Action! which broadcasted on the student station. I made content for the student TV station Quays TV including being a camera operator at the 2023 Asian Media Awards.
Over the last few years, I have continued to gain experience on placements, and I spent 5 days at Hits Radio Manchester and at Quest Media Network (Tameside Radio, Tameside Reporter, and the Glossop Chronicle). I have also been a volunteer reporter for the community radio stations Salford City Radio and Roch Valley Radio. I have also reported on events such as the Tameside Business Awards, Bury Pride and as the reporter for the Rochdale count at the 2024 General Election.
I graduated with a first-class degree in July 2024 and have since gained work experience at Sky , Channel 4 , The Times and the London Evening Standard where I attended court. Since July 2024 I have been a regular paper reviewer on BBC Radio 5 Live for Dotun Adebayo's show where I analyse the top headlines that people will be waking up to. I joined West Kent Radio as a volunteer journalist where I published digital articles and have produced radio packages on topics such as Cognitive Stimulation Therapy and on a ballet group encouraging elderly people to be more active. I was also a John Schofield Trust Fellow for 2024.
I revel in learning new skills, from editing, both in the studio and out; to setting up an outside broadcast; to adapting material to different platforms; to interviewing, researching, and creating scripts to air, both for long and short bulletins.
I am always on the lookout to tell stories and to gain as much experience as possible.
